Workers at Health for Life Dispensaries in White Marsh and Baltimore Unanimously Ratify First Union Contract with UFCW Local 27

[PRESS RELEASE]  BALTIMORE, Feb. 5, 2025  Workers at Health for Life dispensaries in White Marsh and Baltimore have unanimously ratified their first-ever union contract with UFCW Local 27, securing significant workplace improvements and reinforcing the growing strength of unionized cannabis workers in Maryland.

The workers organized last spring and summer, determined to improve their wages, benefits, and working conditions. Their newly ratified contract delivers guaranteed pay raises, increased benefits, enhanced safety measures, and greater clarity in job roles. Additionally, employees at both locations now have the full support and representation of UFCW Local 27.

“This vote sends a powerful message—when workers stand together, they win,” said Jason Chorpenning, President of UFCW Local 27. “These workers fought hard for a fair contract, and now they have one that improves their jobs and their lives. We are incredibly proud of them.”

Workers expressed their excitement and pride in achieving this milestone:

“It’s hard to even find the right words to express how immensely proud I was to be a part of this process. I’m very excited to start feeling the effects of the positive changes we fought for! Thank you, Local 27, for allowing us to explore this opportunity.” – Ian Tolbert

“Being able to go through this process and bring change for my coworkers and I has been a truly amazing experience. I’m so proud of everyone who came in and voted and supported our cause through the process, and I’m so thankful for Local 27 for helping us each step of the way.” – Joe Locco

With this latest victory, UFCW Local 27 continues to lead the way in organizing Maryland’s cannabis industry. In 2024 alone, the union won six elections, including four cannabis dispensaries, solidifying Local 27’s reputation as the Cannabis Workers Union.

“Cannabis workers across Maryland are realizing their power, and Local 27 is here to make sure their voices are heard.” Chorpenning added.

UFCW Local 27 represents nearly 17,000 workers across multiple industries, including grocery, healthcare, food processing, and the rapidly growing cannabis sector. The union remains committed to securing strong contracts, fair wages, and better working conditions for all its members.
